Townview Magnet: Coronavirus

We know several students are having difficulty with the challenges presented by COVID19 – the novel coronavirus – that has hit America and our area.

We are actively working to develop a tutoring system to assists students in several areas including Advanced Placement test prep to assist with courseload issues. Please contact us here if you need assistance. We are hoping to assist our student population as best able throughout the Towniew Magnet Center and will update as we know more.

Our Group

This group developed out of a hope to provide critical information and support to magnet students in Dallas and their campuses.
Originally, the focus was for students and the Science and Engineering campus specifically, but opportunities have presented allowing us to expand our view.

Townview magnet students – among others – leave Dallas ISD and enter into Harvard, Yale, MIT, and all of our premier Texas colleges. We know that many of them are Title I students – experiencing the same challenges as their friends at neighborhood schools. We believe we should honor their commitment to education thru support when and where possible.

Our goal is to support these students and the local community through outreach, parent education, and financially as possible without burdening parents who are often limited in income. Our organization takes parents, teachers, and alumni along with current students to better the school without dues being sent to Austin.

Townview Magnet Education and Alumni Foundation Is A Community Focused Nonprofit

As an IRS recognized 501c3 Public Charity we meet higher standards than other entities. Annually we file disclosures with both the IRS and in multiple state agencies to maintain our nonprofit status. Our organization feels it important that the public know we are good stewards of their donations – be them in kind or financial.

Townview Magnet History

The Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center is a complex of schools near the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, Texas. The school name reflects the view of downtown Dallas.

Dallas ISD superintendent Linus Wright first proposed creating Townview in 1978. His intention was to save costs by having a centrally located magnet center believing it would reduce transportation costs. U.S. federal judge Harold “Barefoot” Sanders – who desgregated Dallas ISD – supported the plan. Today the Townview Law magnet is named after him.

Throughout the years, Townview campuses have ranked nationally in the top ten for both Newsweek and US News and World Report.

Each campus has itsn own ranking system for choosing applicants. During the high school magnet application period rubrics are released so applicants know how they are being judged.

These standards are often made up of a combination of standards. For instance the Talented and Gifted Campus (Townview TAG) takes a holistic, case-study approach. This is used by a screening committee, composed of the principal, the counselor, teachers, and community representatives. Multiple identification criteria are used in the screening process including academic transcripts, TAKS/ITBS scores, a behavioral assessment, student portfolio, and anecdotal information.

The Science and Engineering campus (Townview SEM) on the other hand is much more focused on standardized tests and a short interview.

Community Based Leadership

This organization was founded under the premise citizen servants – have a greater vested interest in student success than do bureaucrats and special interests. As noted earlier – we are required to file reports with multiple state agencies and the IRS we can bring a community based leadership with a demonstated record of good stewardship of donor resources. Unfortunately this is not always the case with other public entities.

Our Foundation Board is composed of interested parents, students, and leaders in the community dedicated to strengthening the Dallas ISD Townview Magnet campus into the best public school program in the nation. Our Board of Directors includes former elected officials, PTA officers, and corporate leaders in education, finance, and healthcare from across the United States.
